Castelfranco and the Giorgione

Visit the many medieval houses and the cathedral

The town of Castelfranco Veneto is characterised by its imposing medieval crenellated walls. The long wall is all decorated with beautiful 18th-century statues, including the one on the islet, representing Giorgione who made the small town famous throughout the world.

Within the walls are numerous medieval houses and the Cathedral, an 18th-century work by Francesco Maria Preti that preserves Giorgione’s greatest work: the famous ‘Madonna in Trono’: it is one of the most beautiful altarpieces of 16th-century Italy. Other works inside the Cathedral are by Jacopo da Bassano, Palma il Giovane, Annibale Carracci and Paolo Veronese. Also not to be missed in Castelfranco is the Teatro Accademico, a splendid example of an 18th-century theatre.
