Marostica

Rich in history

Marostica, which is only 8 km from Bassano del Grappa, is famous for its scenic city walls that tower above the town from the hill. It is also rich in history, the Upper and Lower Castles can still be visited today, but it is known worldwide for the Chess Square and the game held there every two years with 500 participants in typical medieval costumes who form the ‘pieces’ of a living chessboard. This tradition dates back to 1454 when two nobles, Rinaldo d’Angarano and Vieri da Vallonara, challenged each other in a chess game to decide who would have the hand of Princess Lionora.
